Ingredients
  

Wine Base
  • 1 bottle red wine preferably a fruity variety
  • 1 cup port wine for sweetness
  • 1 cup water
Spices and Flavorings
  • 1 piece orange zested and juiced
  • 1 piece lemon zested and juiced
  • 1 stick cinnamon
  • 5 pieces cloves
  • 5 pieces allspice berries
  • 1 tablespoon sugar adjust to taste

Method
 

Prepare the Base
  1. In a saucepan, combine the red wine, port wine, and water. Heat gently over medium heat.
  2. Add the orange and lemon zest, juices, cinnamon stick, cloves, allspice berries, and sugar.
Simmer the Mixture
  1. Bring the mixture to a simmer and let it cook for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Strain and Serve
  1. Remove from heat and strain the mixture through a fine strainer into a serving pitcher.
  2. Serve warm in mugs, garnished with a slice of orange or lemon if desired.
