Prepare Meatballs
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
- In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, bread crumbs, egg, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
- Mix until well combined and form into 1-inch meatballs.
- Place meatballs on a baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes or until cooked through.
Make French Onion Sauce
- In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat.
- Add sliced onions and cook, stirring frequently, until caramelized, about 15 minutes.
- Add beef broth and thyme, simmer for 5 minutes.
Combine and Serve
- Add baked meatballs to the skillet with the onion sauce.
- Sprinkle shredded gruyere cheese over the top and cover until cheese is melted.
- Serve warm with crusty bread or over rice.
