Ingredients
  

Meatball Mixture
  • 1 lb ground beef or ground turkey
  • 1 cup bread crumbs preferably panko
  • 1 large egg beaten
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
French Onion Sauce
  • 2 cups onions thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter for sautéing
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tsp thyme dried or fresh
  • 1 cup gruyere cheese shredded

Method
 

Prepare Meatballs
  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, bread crumbs, egg, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
  3. Mix until well combined and form into 1-inch meatballs.
  4. Place meatballs on a baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes or until cooked through.
Make French Onion Sauce
  1. In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat.
  2. Add sliced onions and cook, stirring frequently, until caramelized, about 15 minutes.
  3. Add beef broth and thyme, simmer for 5 minutes.
Combine and Serve
  1. Add baked meatballs to the skillet with the onion sauce.
  2. Sprinkle shredded gruyere cheese over the top and cover until cheese is melted.
  3. Serve warm with crusty bread or over rice.
